Friendship Force of New Mexico updates

Thank you to the 37 attendants who graced us with their presence at our first luncheon meeting of the year on 1/12/19. We had 10 guests and they along with our members enjoyed an interesting, informative and fun presentation on Curanderismo – Traditional Healing in the Southwest by Dr. Cheo Torres.

We introduced our new board members and recognized past president, board member, hosts, journey participants, etc. whose efforts help to not only sustain our NM FF club but keep it thriving!

The Goals for 2019 are to grow our communication channels, form a phone tree, build new membership, create a new membership directory, increase participation and continue to have fun and make new friends.

Coming events:

February 10 – Chinese New Year Celebration

February 16 – Social – Getting to the Heart of Friendship Force 3-5:00 at the home of Alicia and Roland Fletcher. Please RSVP to Berta.

A Note of Welcome from the 2019 Board Chair

Dear friends,

As you may all know, the governance of our wonderful organization is overseen by a group of 12 dedicated, enthusiastic individuals whose one goal is to maintain a healthy, rewarding Friendship Force so that it continues to thrive and expand well into the future.

Each year, several members step down from the Board and a new group is appointed. We are proud to announce this year’s new appointees:

Please visit the Board of Directors page of our FFI website and take a moment or two to read the biographies of these enthusiastic members – and the other nine Board of Directors members too.

Don’t be afraid to make yourselves known to us at conferences or on Journeys – we need to know what you are thinking.

In friendship,

Bobbie Mulholland

Only a few spaces remain on this Journey to New Zealand!
Journey Coordinator Invitation
FF Tauranga – Western Bay of Plenty hosting visiting ambassadors from FF Manitoba in March 2018.
Explore the North and South Islands of New Zealand
March 21 to April 6, 2019
Join us for a Journey to Tauranga, Western Bay of Plenty, in New Zealand, and a tour of New Zealand’s South Island afterwards, called one of the most beautiful places in the world!
The first week of the Journey will be spent at a homestay with the Tauranga club, where they will share their homes along the Bay of Plenty, a bay area with white sand beaches, fishing boats, marine life, and a volcano. We will also learn about British and native Maori culture in the area, visit abandoned gold mines, and Rotorua, a natural geothermal area with hot springs, geysers, and for Tolkien fans, we will travel to the movie set “Hobbiton.”
After our week with the Tauranga club, we head to the South Island, where we will tour Christchurch and Dunedin, take a train across the Southern Alps to Greymouth and the Punakaiki Pancake Rocks. After staying at Greymouth, we will head south toward the Franz Josef Glacier, the beautiful Haast Valley and Queenstown, passing rainforests and the blue lakes of Hawea, Dunstan, Wanaka and Wakatipu. In Queenstown, we will cruise across Lake Wakatipu to a sheep farm and winery. Later, we will visit Milford Sound in Fjordland National Park before heading across to Dunedin for three nights before heading home.
The cost is $3725, and includes FF fees and tour costs, but not airfare. There are only four spaces left on this trip. Please contact me for more information or to apply. I hope you will join us on this Journey!

Invitation to discover Sierra Leone

Time is running out to sign up for this Journey to Sierra Leone!
Journey Coordinator Invitation
Members of Friendship Force Bo gather outside of the Believes Assembly Ministries.
An Introduction to Sierra Leone
April 13 to April 23, 2019
Holiday greetings to you all!

This is not a request for an end-of-year donation, but rather an invitation to think charitably about a donation of your time and travel budget to the Journey to Sierra Leone with me.

When I’ve approached friends about joining me on this Journey, I’ve gotten responses like “Not on my bucket list” to “Not interested at this time.”  These made me reflect seriously on my motivation in taking on this challenge in the realization that it might be a hard sell.

I see this Journey as the true embodiment of the Friendship Force pledge for “cultural understanding, global friendship building and to make the world a more peaceful place.”

Two clubs that have worked hard for their first-ever inbound Journey. And the country of Sierra Leone has done the hard work of settling a decade-long civil war, though they were then hit with an Ebola outbreak 12 years later. However, Sierra Leone was declared Ebola-free in 2016, and that year, Sierra Leone was described as the fastest growing destination by the UN World Tourism Organization.
Given that many world tourist destinations are being overrun, it is even more important that we encourage our members to explore new destinations as a way of promoting cultural understanding.  Here’s a British rave about the appeal Sierra Leone holds for Europeans looking to travel south this time of year.
But our Journey is not about places, but about faces. Clubs in both Freetown, the capital and largest city, and Bo, the second largest city and capital of the southern region, are busy preparing for our arrival. They have a designed a program to give Friendship Force maximum exposure to both the country’s leadership in Freetown and tribal leaders in Bo.
So even if Sierra Leone is not on your bucket list, I invite you to join me in furthering the mission of Friendship Force in Africa, and to make new friends in that part of the world.

Since there are visas to procure and vaccinations to acquire before the Journey, we ask that applications be returned to me by January 13, 2019 at the special address I’ve set up for that

Thanks for your consideration, and again, all the best to you and yours for a joyous new year. Make peace break out around the world!

In Friendship,
Teresa Wilkin, FF Greater Olympia
